FUT Weekend League: Road to Elite part 4

FUT Weekend League: Road to Elite part 4

Hey guys, back with another article. Today we’re gonna talk about one of the most important aspects in game: defending.
It’s something a lot of people struggle with, which is why we’re going to cover it step-by-step.

Players
I’ll keep it short on this one since I already covered most of it in the 1st article which you can check out here.
The essence of it is that you always want at least 1 defender with Low/High or Medium/High workrates (e.g. Chiellini, Manolas, Pepe, Smalling, Koscielny) with 70+ pace and good physical stats. The other slot you can fill as you please but I highly recommend 70+ pace and good defending stats.

Good pairing examples:
Boateng-Smalling
Manolas-Varane
Chiellini-Miranda
Toprak-Pepe
Koscielny-Koulibaly
Umtiti-Bonucci
Baily-Reid

Bad Pairing examples
David Luiz-Thiago Silva
Hummels-Ramos
Naldo-Sokratis
Baily-Mathiue

You get the gist of it.

In-game mechanics

Defending around the circle
This is the part most people have trouble with; to defend solid.
One of the most important parts of defending like you have Italian blood is:

DO NOT TOUCH YOUR CENTREBACKS UNTIL YOU HAVE NO OTHER OPTIONS LEFT!

The most common mistake I see people make is panicking when their opponent comes with an attacking threat, rush forward with their CB to make an attempted tackle, and fail to do so. BOOM, you now have a hole in your defence the size of Adebayo Akinfewa and you made it 10x easier for your opponent to score.
What you want to do is to defend with your midfielders.
One of the things that helped me is rebind my teammate contain-button (R1 on PS4, RB on XBOX) to X (PS4) or A (XBOX). Please stay away from the normal contain button, it’s useless. The teammate contain-button on the other hand, is very useful. It allows you to cut of passing lanes, while still applying enough pressure to narrow your opponents space. This will often result in your opponent making hard passes which can be easily intercepted with your CDM. This is a very effective way to defend in the area around the midfield where your opponent is not yet in a scoring position.

Defending around and in the box
Defending in this area is tricky, too little pressure and your opponent has more than enough room to shoot, too much pressure and you open your opponents players up to walk free on goal. The trick is to create just enough space between your defender (ideally a midfielder but if left with no other options your wingbacks or centrebacks) which makes it hard for your opponent to shoot whilst not creating huge gaps at the same time.
ALWAYS USE L2/RT! By jockeying you can cover the opponent much easier and tackle when needed. When tackling make sure to get your timing right or your tackle will whiff and your player will need to recover. This wil give your opponent more than enough time to rush past the defender or open another player up.

Defending on the wings
Your opponent will have pacey players here, the only way to keep up with them is to use pacey wingbacks yourself. You won’t get away with using Lahm for example because any good opponent will just lob the ball over your backline, with no way for Lahm to catch up. When confronted with a 1 on 1 situation around the cornerflag, apply the same concept as normal. Don’t be too aggresive as people will use a lot of face up-dribbling and skill-moves around this area, and you don’t want them to break through. If given too much room with no wingback left to cover your opponent can just use a driven pass or triple tap cross for an easy goal.

Standing tackle
The standing tackle can be very useful, but beware not to overuse it missing it can be very costly.
Examples
You can use it to outmuscle your opponent when in a sprint for the ball.
You can use it when your opponent overextends
You can use it to give you more reach with your player (i.e. when your opponent makes a sudden turn)

Simple things that will massively improve your defending
-Don’t use L1 to switch players, use the right stick. This will make sure you select the right player and you can flick between players faster.
-Avoid sliding tackles unless when your 100% sure it will result in clearing the ball/ gives you a better position.
-When faced with a single defender and an opponent rushing towards you, don’t panic. If out of position move backwards while holding L2 and try to read your opponents path. If done correctly, it will result in you recapturing the ball or severely limiting your opponents options.
-Do not neglect the sprint button when defending. As I said before rushing towards your opponent is bad but when your opponent makes a pass, you can use the sprint button to cover other passing lanes or flick to another one of your players and cover/ recapture the ball.
-Don’t panic when someone uses flashy skill-moves or starts face-up dribbling, stay calm, hold L2 and time your tackle right. Sometimes you don’t even have to tackle and your opponent will just walk right into you, resulting in him losing the ball.
-Actually, don’t panic at all it’s the worst thing you can do when defending. Stay calm, try to predict your opponent options and react to them in the correct manner.

I’ll leave you guys with a youtube-video on defending made by pro player @Hashtag_Boras.
Most youtube-guides are very clickbaity but with very little substance, this one on the other hand is very informative.
You can check it out here!

That’s all I have on defending, it’s hardly rocket science yet the execution can be difficult. That being said, apply the things you read in this guide and your defence will improve for sure.

FUT Weekend League: Road to Elite part 3

FUT Weekend League: Road to Elite part 3

Hey guys back with another article for you competitive players out there in the field.
How did everyones Weekend League go? I finished 32-8 which I’m not too happy about. I don’t like blaming the game too much but damn there was a  lot of delay this weekend. Anyhow, today we’re gonna talk about player instructions since a few people requested it. From now on we will also delve a little deeper into actual game-mechanics.

Player Instructions (PI) are essential to your game since it will influence the way your players move (or stay in position) on the field.
Let’s take a look at every position on the field and their possible PI.
For the example we will use a standard 4-1-2-1-2 (2) formation.

4-3-2-1 for chem purposes
squadbaran.png

4-1-2-1-2 (2) in game
squadbaran2.png
Let’s start with the backs.
Leftback and Rightback
Backs have 2 options:
-Attacking Runs
-Interceptions

Always leave Attacking runs on Stay back while attacking. If you don’t your backs will make runs more often which will leave gaps in your defence. Even when instructed to stay back they will sometimes bomb the wing. Alaba for instance plays like a winger when not instructed to stay back and even then he sometimes just goes yolo.
Leave interceptions as it is since you don’t want them to be too passsive nor aggresive

Centrebacks

For centrebacks it’s the same as your wingbacks except easier since you don’t have to change anything! Always leave them on Stay back while attacking since you never want any gaps in your central defence.  If you prefer to have at least defender that plays a little more forward, use a defender with High attacking workrates. They will sometimes make rushes forward enabling you to pressure earlier in your half of the pitch. Again, never use more than 1 defender with high attacking workrates!

Defending Midfielder
Defending Midfielders have 3 options:
-Defensive Behaviour
-Attacking Support
-Interceptions
It’s best to leave Defensive Behaviour on Balanced Defence or Man Mark. Man Mark makes the player cover more. You want to set Attacking Support to Stay Back While Attacking since you actually want to use him before you use your defenders (IE when your opponent has the ball on your half of the pitch, you can use your CDM to cover passing-lines/ intercept whilst pressuring with your other midfielders).
Interceptions is again best left untouched.

Central Midfielders
Central Midfielders have 4 options:
-Attacking Support
-Support on Crosses
-Interceptions
-Positioning Freedom
I recommend leaving these on default as it will result in a nice balance of the first three options and it will keep your CMs in position, which will allow for easier passing.

Central Attacking Midfielder
Attacking Midfielders have 4 options:
-Defensive Support
-Support on Crosses
-Positioning Freedom
-Interceptions
Instructions for Attacking Midfielders are pretty flexible, one thing I do recommend is to always keep Defensive Support on Stay Forward since you don’t want your CAM to fall too far back. Positioning Freedom can be set to default or Free Roam. Free Roam can be useful but it can also result in your CAM playing more as a CM. This will limit your options when attacking so make sure to test them both out.

Strikers
Strikers have 4 options:
-Support Runs
-Attacking Runs
-Interceptions
-Defensive Pressing
Attacking Runs is the most important, I highly recommend setting this on Get in Behind. This will result in your players making runs past your opponents defenders more often, giving you some great openings that can result in a goal. (IE one of your CMs intercepts around the circle, you pass it to your CAM, who passes it through to 1 striker. The other striker will than often make a run behind the last line of defence so you can play a (driven) throughball which will have you 1 on 1 with the keeper. To add to this you can use L1 when passing so both your CM and CAM will make runs forward allowing for easier triangle passing)
Defensive Pressing can be set to Press Back Line. This will keep your strikers up the field and pressure the opponents defence. The other ones are best left on default.

So let’s look at a quick example. Player Instructions are not very diverse (as opposed to custom tactics) so most top 100/Elite players tend to use the same.

Fullbacks:
Stay back while attacking
Leave the rest on default

Centrebacks:
Leave on default

Central Defensive Midfielder:
Stay back while attacking
Man Mark/Default
Leave the rest on default

Central Midfielders
Leave on default

Central Attacking Midfielders
Stay Forward
Free Roam/ Stay in position
Leave the rest on default

Strikers
Get in behind
Press Back Line
Leave the rest on default

FIFA Weekend League: Road to Elite part 2

FIFA Weekend League: Road to Elite part 2

Hey guys, my name is Berhaninho, I’m a 25-year old division 1 and Elite player who has been playing online FIFA since 2011. I started studying criminology this year which leaves me with a decent amount of spare time so I figured, why not give back to the community.
This will be the second part of the series.
Playing with the right CT can make a world of difference for your game, so let’s get too it.
A lot of people don’t know what the different sliders mean in the CT menu so let’s have a look at them first:

Build up play

Speed
This one is pretty self-explanatory, it dictates the speed of your players in terms of moving forward. The higher the number on this slider the faster your players will move, the higher the overall pace of your game
I recommend keeping this somewhere between 50 and 90, depending on your playstyle.

Passing
This slider influences the support from teammates in terms of passing. If you keep it on a low number, teammates will more often come to the ball for a pass, if you keep it on a high number they will make more runs. Keeping it around the 50 mark will result in a balanced passing-game.

Positioning
This determines how your players move in terms of their positions. Free form will result in your players straying away from their positions, organised will keep them in position. I highly recommend keeping this on organised as you mostly want your defence and midfield to stay in formation.

Chance creation

Passing
This one is tricky, the lower the number the lower the risk involved in your passing. The higher the number the higher the risk but it will more often result in a opening if succesful.
I recommend keeping this somwhere between 50 and 70 as it will result in a nice balance.

Crossing
I’d recommend leaving this on a average number since it determines the amount of crosses that should be played which will result in your players moving different.
Keep this somewhere between 40 and 60.

Shooting
The shooting slider makes your players move more in terms of shottaking. They will take positions which will result in good shooting-positions for you. Distance shots can be very lethal this FIFA so I recommend never leaving it on a low number.
Somewhere around the 60 mark works best.

Positioning
Same as in the Build up play section, only this one is for when in the final third. It’s focussed purely on attacking purposes so I recommend to always keep this in Free Form Your players will make unpredictable runs and open you up for a chance more often.

Defence

Pressure
Also a very important slider, it determines when your team will start pressing the opponent. If you keep it on a low number they will only start pressing the ball high up your end of the pitch, if you keep it on a high number pressure will be doubled but it will open your players up more.
I highly recommend keeping it somewhere around the 50 mark so you don’t open yourself too much whilst still applying enough pressure.

Agression
Influences the agression your players will apply when defending. If you leave it on a low number your players will mostly just contain the opponent, putting it on a high number will result in your players more agressively hunting the ball. This slider is best kept around the 50 mark.

Team width
Team width influences the how your players will position themselves towards the ball. A low number will result in a very narrow team (IE your leftback will move to the middle when the ball is on the right side).
Keep this somewhere between 30 and 60.

Defender line
You have 2 options here, offside trap or cover. Always go with cover as it will result in your defenders covering and not playing on the offside trap which is very risky. If you really want to play around with the offside trap a little bit you can do it manually via the D-pad but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Examples
Let’s have a look at the CT some top 100 players use

@Hashtag_Tass

@Hashtag_Boras

As you can see there’s a lot of room to play around with every slider.
The best advice I can give you guys is to not just copy someones custom tactics because they are doing well with it.
Try things out in divisions or single match and see what works best for you (IE 90 speed or 60 speed can make a world of difference but one isn’t necessarily  better than the other)

That’s it for now guys, you can follow me on Twitter if you want to stay up to date on the series or tell me what you want to see covered next!

FIFA Weekend League: Road to Elite Part 1

FIFA Weekend League: Road to Elite Part 1

Hey guys, my name is Berhaninho, I’m a 25-year old division 1 and Elite player who has been playing online FIFA since 2011. I started studying criminology this year which leaves me with a decent amount of spare time so I figured, why not give back to the community. This will be the first part of a series I’ll be doing on a consistent basis.

So let’s get right to it then; the talk of the town, the new feature of this year’s FIFA: FUT Champions.
Oh boy has this gamemode brought up some much needed competitiveness in the scene, where winning divison 1 for a measly 15.000 coins was the anti-climax of your blood, sweat, tears and broken controllers.
FUT Champions is where people can go all out, sweat all around. Parking the bus, passing it around the back from minute 21 to 90, another squad with he-who-must-not-be-named.
p90714

BUT, despite all these shenanigans, which are to be expected when things get hyper-competitive, there’s something beautiful waiting for you.  Elite 1. Everyone wants to make it, few actually do.

I say fuck that, everyone can make it to Elite with the right mindset.

So, how do we go about doing this you ask? We prepare. We prepare well, we play well and we finish well. Easier said than done right? Very true, and that’s exactly why I’m doing this series. I’ll go through every step, every angle and every far post shot you have to take that will make you a better player overall. (disclaimer: I’m aware there is no ”right” or ”wrong” way to play fifa but in my opinion there is a ”optimal” way to play in many cases, which I will be discussing here. If you don’t agree with something I’m open to all forms of discussion)

First thing we’re gonna discuss is the basis: your squad.
Let’s take a look at some squads of 3 top 100 players.

@TyWaltontywalton

@Hashtag_Tass (Change to 4-1-2-1-2 (2) in game)
tass

@Kurt0411
kurt0411

Disregard the expensive players for now, it’s clear 4-3-2-1  (switching to 4-1-2-1-2 in game for chem purposes) is tier 1 this fifa. I strongly recommend using this as your starting point.

Second, let’s look at the players. I’ll list some good players for the big 4 leagues.

Goalkeepers:
Neuer, De Gea, Handanovic, Leno, Butland, Lloris, Buffon.
All these goalkeepers are viable, if your on a budget than Butland is the way to go.
Stay away from short goalies like Bravo, Mandana and Ter Stegen, height is rather important.
Chemstyle: Gloves or Cat.

Leftback:
La Liga: Jordi Alba, Marcelo, Filipe Luis, Gaya
Bundesliga: Alaba, Wendell, Hector
Calcio A: Alex Sandro (OP)
Premier League: Shaw, Clichy, van Aanholt, Moreno, Azpilicueta

Rightback:
La Liga: Juanfran, Carvajal, De Marcos
Bundesliga: Piszcek, Brosinski
Calcio A: Dani Alves, Florenzi, Bruno Peres, Abate
Premier League: Walker, Bellerin, Clyne, Valencia

For your fullbacks pace is the most important attribute. If they lack pace, defending attributes have to make up for it (e.g. Azpilicueta).

Optimal workrates: H/H or H/M
Chemstyle: Shadow or Anchor

Centerbacks:
La Liga: Pepe, Varane, Ramos, Umtiti
Bundesliga: Boateng, Sokratis, Toprak, Naldo
Calcio A: Chiellini, Bonucci, Barzagli, Miranda, Manolas, Koulibaly
Premier League: Smalling, Otamendi, Bailly, Koscielny, Mustafi, Matip, Reid

Your centerbacks should have good defensive and physical attributes, preferably with 70+ pace. Stay away from players who lack pace (e.g. Javi Martinez) or bad defensive stats (e.g. Mangala). It’s better to have a pacey defender with lower defensive stats (e.g. Bailly) than vice versa.

Optimal Workrates: M/H, L/H, M/M (it’s fine to have a H/L or H/M defender but make sure you have at least one player with high defending workrates)
Chemstyle: Anchor

Defending Midfielders:
La Liga: N’Zonzi, Casemiro
Bundesliga: Luiz Gustavo, (Vidal and Renato Sanches can be used but are better as CMs due to their workrates)
Calcio A: Khedira, Allan, Felipe Melo (Again, Marchisio and Naingolan can be used but are better as CMs)
Premier League: Matic, Kanté, Dembelé, Can, Fernandinho

As you can see the Premier League has the best defending midfielders. I highly recommend Kanté (or Matic when on a budget). Other leagues lack tier 1 CDMs but I found especially Allan to perform decent.

Optimal Workrates: M/H, M/M. Stay away from player with High Attacking Workrates, it will leave gaps in your midfield and leaves you more vulnerable to counters.
Chemstyle: Shadow or Catalyst.

Central Midfielders:
La Liga: Modric, Iniesta, André Gomes,
Bundesliga: Vidal, Renato Sanches, Thiago, Draxler
Calcio A: Marchisio, Naingolan, Pjanic, Hamsik, Parolo, Asamoah
Premier League:Pogba, De Bruyne, Touré, Gündogan, Can, Dembelé, Touré, Fernandinho, Fellaini, Rooney

Your midfield is the core of your squad and so very important. People tend to overlook workrates though so be careful.

You want at least 1 H/H player (e.g. Vidal, Naingolan, Asamoah, Marchisio, Renato Sanches) who have decent pace, passing, shooting and defending stats. You can fill the other spot with a more all-round defensive player (e.g. Fernandinho, Can, Fellaini) or go with a more attacking option (e.g. Rooney, Hamsik, Draxler). Either way make sure your midfield is well-balanced for the best results.

Optimal Workrates: H/H M/M H/M.
Chemstyle: Hawk, Hunter, Catalyst

Attacking Midfielders
La Liga: Rodriguez, Isco, Rakitic
Bundesliga: Draxler, Götze
Calcio A: Hamsik, Pjanic, Banega
Premier League: De Bruyne, Eriksen, Coutinho, Roberto Firmino

It’s important that they have decent passing, shooting and pace with preferably  either 4* + skills or a 4*+  weak foot. Both is better but more expensive obviously.

If you want to play 4-1-2-1-2 (2) by starting 4-3-2-1 and switching in game for chem-purposes, your left with 2 wingers. This only applies when you want to use your wingers as a striker  (e.g. Bale, Neymar, Martial) or as a CAM. I’ll list a few wingers and strikers that make for decent CAMs:
La Liga: Griezmann, Neymar, Messi, Benzema, Gameiro, Carrasco
Bundesliga: Reus, Costa, Dembelé, Robben, Bellarabi, Müller
Calcio A: Salah, Cuadrado, Dybala, Mertens, Perisic, Insigne
Premier League: Hazard, Martial, Payet, Son, Bolasie, Sterling, Mané, Mahrez, Mkhitaryan

Optimal Workates: H/L H/M
Chemstyle: Hawk, Hunter

Strikers and Wingers
I’m gonna list strikers and wingers together here due to formation switching. The ones with * behind their name are better suit on the wings.
La Liga: Griezmann, Ronaldo, Bale, Messi, Neymar, Suarez, Benzema, Ben Yedder, Williams*, Carrasco*,
Bundesliga: Lewandowski, Aubameyang, Embolo, Hernandez, Werner, Reus, Costa*, Robben*, Coman*, Dembelé*
Calcio A: Higuain, Dybala, Mertens, Icardi, Immobile, Bacca, Insigne*, El Shaarawy*, Cuadrado*, Salah*
Premier League: Zlatan, Aguero, Lukaku, Sturridge, Remy, Musa, Firmino, Vardy, Hazard, Sterling*, Mané*, Sané*, Mkhitaryan*, Willian*.

Pace, finishing and a strong weakfoot is what you’re looking for. Due to across the body shots being so OP this year, stay away from players with <3* weak foots.

Optimal Workrates: H/L H/M
Chemstyle: Hawk, Hunter

Notable players from other leagues:
Lacazette, Ben Arfa, Aurier, Matuidi, Thiago Silva, SBC Villa, Sneijder, Di Maria, Krychowiak, Tevez. Let me know if you miss anyone that you highly recommend!

Squads
So, now we have a decent amount of players listed but still nothing substantial. Let’s take a look at some tier 1 teams in every price-range.

All these teams are capable of hitting Elite, even the cheap ones (the budget BPL-squad actually reached top 100).

That’s it for now guys, part 2 will be coming soon. Make sure to drop your feedback below or hit me up on twitter/ reddit.
